$85 million for Black Spot upgrades

Dangerous road sites across Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland will be upgraded under the Federal Government’s 2025–26 Black Spots Program. 

The latest round includes 162 projects aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities on high-risk roads. Safety upgrades will include roundabouts, traffic calming measures, improved lighting and new safety barriers. 

Assistant Minister for Regional Development, Anthony Chisholm, said the investment reflects the Federal Government’s broader focus on road safety and job creation. 

“We recently announced our significant boost to road safety funding, which included a commitment to increase annual Black Spots Program funding to $150 million from next year,” he said. 

The Black Spots Program targets road locations where serious crashes have occurred or are likely to occur. Projects are selected through state-based consultative panels, which include representatives from local government, road authorities, motoring groups and safety advocates. 

Panels in WA, Victoria and Queensland are chaired by Senator Varun Ghosh, Lisa Chesters MP and Shayne Neumann MP respectively. 

“This Program is driven by communities, for communities and I’d like to thank the Black Spot Consultative Committee Chairs for their advocacy,” Chisholm said. 

“Anyone can nominate a dangerous site for Black Spot funding, if you know a Black Spot near you, please consider nominating that site for investigation.” 

The Black Spots Program forms part of a broader Federal response to the national road toll, alongside a plan to double annual Roads to Recovery funding to $1 billion and improve national road safety data collection. 

The Federal Government said the Black Spot upgrades will not only help save lives, but also deliver strong economic benefits by preventing costly crashes for communities.
