NSW launches major road upgrades to support Renewable Energy Zones

A series of road upgrades from the Port of Newcastle to the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) will commence within weeks, with the NSW Government awarding a contract to deliver the first stage of its $128 million Port to REZ Program.

Designed to facilitate the transport of oversized components critical to the state’s renewable energy rollout, the program will leave behind safer, more efficient roads for regional communities.

Australian civil contractor BMD Constructions Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract for the initial works, which will span 19 key locations between the port and Elong Elong near Dubbo. The works are expected to generate around 60 construction jobs.

The $128 million program is jointly funded by the NSW Government, which is contributing $110.5 million, and the Australian Government, which is providing $18 million.

Upgrades will include road widening, drainage improvements, installation of new turning lanes, and utility relocations tailored to each site. These works will enable the safe passage of wind turbine blades, solar panels and other large equipment essential for REZ construction, while easing congestion and improving safety for all road users.

Initial construction will begin at Selwyn Street in Mayfield North, Lonsdale Street in Jerrys Plains, Vinegaroy Road in Cassilis, and Barneys Reef Road in Dunedoo. Most of the first-stage upgrades are expected to be completed within the year.

Further road upgrades across NSW are being investigated as part of the broader Port to REZ initiative.
