Major WA industrial sites have been awarded for their water-saving efforts.

Industrial precincts in Perth’s Hazelmere and Henderson have been recognised for their innovative approach to water conservation, earning gold waterwise endorsements under Water Corporation’s Waterwise Development Program.

Hesperia’s Hazelmere Interchange Project and Orion Industrial Park by DevelopmentWA were honoured at a recent event celebrating sustainable design in Western Australia.

Both precincts feature native, waterwise plants and water-sensitive landscaping to reduce irrigation needs, along with rainwater tanks for flushing toilets and garden watering. Water-efficient fixtures ensure tenants use water responsibly.

The Waterwise Development Program, a partnership between Water Corporation and the Urban Development Institute of Australia (WA), has recognised 30 developments since 2014 for implementing best-practice water efficiency.

The initiative supports the WA Government’s Kep Katitjin-Gabi Kaadadjan (Waterwise Perth Action Plan 3), which aims to create waterwise communities in Boorloo (Perth) and Bindjareb (Peel) by 2030.

Water Minister Don Punch praised the industry’s commitment to sustainable water management.

“Smarter urban planning that focuses on water-sensitive design is an important part of the bigger picture when it comes to sustainably managing our State’s water resources,” Mr Punch said.

“This is especially true in southern WA, where the impacts of climate change on rainfall means every drop of water is so precious.

“It’s fantastic to see developers prioritising water conservation, and especially pleasing that water-sensitive design principles are increasingly commonplace at industrial precincts.”

Water Corporation’s program also recognised a separate residential development, Catalina Green near Mindarie, which offers residents rebates on water-efficient appliances and waterwise landscaping packages.
